Experience level

Aimed at those looking to challenge themselves in the mountains! A good level of fitness is recommended

The Pyrenees is one of Europe's top cycling destinations, used annually in the Tour de France and providing some of the most exhilarating viewing of the whole Tour! The mountains here are tough, but the scenery is spectacular and it has a sense of calm that we feel sets it apart from the Alps.

We'll take you on a journey across this stunning landscape, from the Atlantic Coast over to the Mediterranean, with a total of 15 cols to tackle in between! The scenery does not relent for the whole trip as we take on the formidable Cols du Tourmalet, Aubisque, Peyresourde and Aspin as well as cycling through some of the more remote and quieter roads.

Given the nature of the terrain, the majority of days are 60 to 80 kilometers, with varying amounts of climbing to be done! We've also factored in a recovery day after day 4 to recharge your batteries. With a total of 700km and over 14,000m to cover, this is no mean feat, but the satisfaction of conquering these iconic climbs and enjoying some stunning scenery will be worth every pedal stroke!

Stage 1: St Jean de Luz to Oloron St Marie - 126km, 1800m

We'll leave the bustling coastal town of St Jean de Luz behind and having ridden along the Atlantic shores for a few miles, we'll turn inland towards the stunning Pyrenees. Early on we'll be passing through lots of pretty Basque settlements made famous by their uniform white and burgundy houses. Our first climb of note, the Col de St Ignace comes just after leaving the wonderful village of Ascain, followed by the Col De Pinodieta and finally, the biggest test of the day, the Col d'Osquich.

Interspersed on these climbs are rolling hills that will make this day seem tougher than its comparable elevation gain may suggest - with one final little tester to get to the wonderful town of Oloron St Marie for our evening stop over.

Stage 2: Oloron St Marie to Argeles Gazost - 83km, 1900m

Today tackles the first big ascent of the Col D'Aubisque. A relatively flat start to the day gives way to the big climb and lunch at the top, before the small additional climb of Col de Soulor. We then enjoy a sublime descent down to Argeles

Stage 3: Argeles Gazost to Campan via the Tourmalet - 54km, 1900m

The absolutely iconic climb of the Tourmalet needs no introduction, this ever present of the Tour de France is totally breath taking in every way. You'll be rewarded with world class views and a superb descent all the way to your base in Campan - This is a day that will live long in the memory!

Stage 4: Campan to Bagneres de Luchon - 60km, 1750m

Today is a two col day, with an early start up the the Col d'Aspin, followed by an afternoon climbing the Col de Peyresourde - both are frequently included on the Tour de France itinerary, with yet more sublime views as we cross into the Haute Garonne region.

With slightly easier average gradients than some of their neighbours, these climbs work well as a one day ride.

After today we'll have a rest day in Bagneres de Luchon, with the opportunity to explore this pretty spa town.

Stage 5: Bagneres De Luchon to St Girons - 84km, 1400m

A gentle start to the day to ease the legs back onto the bike and up the mountains! The first climb of the day will come at 25km the lesser known Col des Ares. The main climb of the day comes at 47km, the Portet d'Aspet! A long, sweeping descent will take us into our next region, the Ariege!

Stage 6: St Girons to Tariscon sur Ariege 59km, 1300m

A deceptively tricky morning awaits today, with no major climbs due until the Col de Port in the afternoon, you'd be forgiven for underestimating this rolling bit off terrain!

Stage 7: Tarascon Sur Ariege to Salveznes - 94km, 2500m

Today is the last of the super high passes, as we tackle the almighty col de Pailheres! This 20km climb takes us just below 2000m in altitude, and offers arguable the most impressive view of the entire trip! The afternoon will also treat you to the gorgeous Gorges de St George - another trip highlight!

Stage 8: Salveznes to Prades - 58km, 1300m

Today forms a slightly different feel as the terrain rolls, twist and turns, rather than having a focal climb to consider. You will do the col de Auzines, but the real jewel in the crown of today is the sense that you have well and truly crossed over into the Mediterranean!

Stage 9: Prades to Collioure - 80km, 1,000m

The final day to Colliure is as close to a triumphant procession as you can get. There is a moderate climb to conquer first, the col de Fontcouverte! However, once we have topped out, the remaining 40km or so is predominantly down hill, as the glorious med sea comes ever closer and thoughts can start to turn to celebratory drink and swims in the warm waters!
