Slovenia is a beautiful country to explore by bike, with a well developed cycle network. Plus, as Europe's most sustainable country it has excellent eco credentials - the combination of quiet roads, blooming meadows, striking scenery and extensive nature makes it a perfect destination for a cycling tour.
This trip takes in the well known highlights of Lakes Bled and Bohinj, features the country's highest mountain pass, journeys into the Julian Alps and ventures into the stunning Triglav National Park. All this is packed into a relatively small area, enabling us to enjoy this spectacular and diverse countryside from our saddles!
You'll enjoy picturesque backroads, stunning mountain passes and top quality bike paths on this superb cycling adventure. This coupled with excellent hospitality and local culinary delights will complete this rural and beautiful adventure.
The Mellow Jersey guides will be on hand to support you every step of the way, with refreshments, support and an encouraging word to get you up those climbs! We hope you're able to join us!
We start our tour in Solkan, and ease ourselves into the week with a journey out into the vineyards of the Nova Gorica region. Our route takes us predominantly on quiet backroads, with panoramic lush green scenery on all sides. There's also a few short climbs to test the legs and give us a taste of what the following days will have in store.
We'll pass through some small communes and skirt around the outskirts of Adjovscina before looping back to our base in Solkan.
We start our day today with just under 20km of bike route tracking the Soca river. The bike network in Slovenia is superb and means you can enjoy quiet routes and beautiful scenery whilst chatting with your fellow cycling companions.
As we leave the bike path, the climbing starts, and we track uphill for the next c.20km getting our first taste of the mountains, and the stunning views that accompany them! The scenery is dramatic, but also very green with beautiful meadows and stunning forests to admire. The latter part of the day takes us back down into the valley and over to our next stop of Tomlin.
Today we work our way further east, through the hills and onwards to Lake Bled. We stop for lunch at Lake Bohinj, the largest permanent lake in Slovenia - there’s something very special about this place, and the small sleepy town that accompanies it, and we'll soak up its charm before heading on.
The afternoon takes us through the countryside, with its vast meadows and dramatic scenery over to Lake Bled. Here you’ll see the famous castle at the centre of the lake, and there’s the option to finish with a full loop, taking in the scenery on all sides. Don’t forget to sample the famous Bled cream cake – you’ve earned it after all!
We leave Bled behind and transition to our next base of Kranjska Gora, an Alpine Resort in North West Slovenia. Our morning takes us through stunning farmlands on quiet country lanes, with beautiful scenery on all sides.
In the afternoon we transition onto one of Slovenia's bike routes, amazing purpose built roads for you to explore the country on two wheels. We pass through a section of the Triglav National Park, Slovenia's largest protected area filled with nature amidst a mountain backdrop. Our day finishes in Kranjska Gora, well known for winter sports, and the gateway to the Julian alps.
Today's route is simply superb and has a bit of everything! Our journey starts with 50km on an amazing traffic free bike path routed on an old railway line - we work our way over to Chiusaforte where we'll have a break for coffee in the old train station (now cafe!) at the base of the Selle Nevea climb.
From here we start our 18km climb up to the town of Selle Nevea. It starts out very gradually, with a few downhill sections to take the edge off, but overall the gradients are not particularly steep, and the road is quiet, making it an enjoyable climb.
The descent is superb with some fantastic tarmac and sweeping turns to enjoy, along with more of the iconic mountain scenery and lake views on the way. Our day finishes with a final section on the bike path back to base.
Today is the Queen stage of the trip, taking in Slovenia’s highest mountain pass, and the Soca valley – some of the most stunning scenery on the entire tour.
The climbing starts from the off, heading straight into the 24 hairpins (with cobbles on most corners!) that make up this iconic climb. However, the view will more than make up for the burn in your legs as you top out and enjoy panoramic views of breathtaking mountains on all sides. You’re in for a superb descent, with 25 more hairpins to enjoy as you wind your way down to the jewel of the Soca valley.
Here our route tracks the journey of the Soca river, with its beautiful clear blue water, and mountains towering around you on both sides. The final section of our day is spent on beautiful backroads as we work our way to our final destination of Tomlin.
